When The Church Feels Like Nineveh

Scripture Focus

"And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?"

— Jonah 4:11

A Deeper Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we come before you today with a sense of concern and compassion for our church community, which at times may feel like the city of Nineveh - a place of great spiritual darkness and confusion. As we reflect on the story of Jonah and his reluctant journey to Nineveh, we are reminded that even in the most challenging of environments, your love and mercy can prevail, and that it is never too late for people to turn to you and receive your forgiveness and salvation. May we, as a church, be faithful to your call to be a light in the darkness, to proclaim your message of hope and redemption to all who will listen, and to trust in your sovereign power to bring about transformation and renewal, even in the most unlikely of places, just as you did in the great city of Nineveh, and may our hearts be filled with the same concern and compassion for the lost that you have, as expressed through the prophet Jonah, 'And should I not have concern for the great city of Nineveh, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left—and also many animals?'

A Short Prayer

"Dear Lord, as we navigate the complexities of our church community, help us to remember the hearts that are lost and in need of your guidance, just as the city of Nineveh was, and grant us the compassion to reach out to them in love. May our church be a beacon of hope and a reflection of your mercy, just as you showed to the people of Nineveh through the prophet Jonah."
