Prime Video Listed ‘The Chosen’ as Psychological Science Fiction, and Christians Are Ticked

Amazon Prime Video has apparently given The Chosen an unexpected genre designation: Psychological Science Fiction.

Screenshots of the listing began circulating online this week, showing the hit series categorized under the genre despite being a historical drama based on the life and ministry of Jesus. The screenshots quickly sparked discussion among fans, many of whom questioned how a show rooted in the Gospel accounts ended up alongside sci-fi titles.

Created by Dallas Jenkins, The Chosen has become the most-watched crowdfunded TV series in history and recently entered a major distribution partnership with Amazon Prime Video.

Amazon has not publicly explained the classification, and it’s unclear whether the label was the result of automated metadata, an internal categorization error or something else entirely. Still, the unusual genre tag generated plenty of buzz online, with viewers expressing everything from confusion to amusement at seeing Jesus’ ministry described as “psychological science fiction.”
