A Deeper Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, we approach you with humility and reverence, seeking to understand the complexities of your Word. As we read through the book of Deuteronomy, we are met with passages that challenge our modern sensibilities and moral compass. The command to destroy the nations inhabiting the land of Canaan can be particularly troubling, and we struggle to reconcile this with the God of love and mercy that we know through Jesus Christ. We pray that you would give us insight into the historical and cultural context of these commands, and that you would help us to see how they fit into the broader narrative of your redemption of humanity. Help us to understand that your ways are not our ways, and that your thoughts are not our thoughts. Give us wisdom to discern the differences between the Old and New Covenants, and to see how Jesus has fulfilled the law and brought a new era of grace and mercy. We pray that you would guide us as we grapple with these difficult questions, and that you would give us a deeper understanding of your character and your heart. May our study of your Word be guided by the Holy Spirit, and may we emerge with a deeper love and appreciation for you, and a greater commitment to following Jesus' teachings of love and compassion.
