Why did Jesus have to die?

The Biblical Answer

The cross is the absolute center of the Christian faith, but many wonder why it was necessary. God is perfectly just and perfectly loving. Because He is just, sin cannot simply be ignored; it requires a penalty. Because He is loving, He did not want humanity to bear that penalty forever.

Jesus, being both fully God and fully man, lived the perfect, sinless life that we could not live. By willingly dying on the cross, He acted as our substitute. He took upon Himself the wrath and punishment that our sins deserved. His death satisfied the justice of God, while His resurrection defeated death, allowing us to be freely forgiven and reconciled to God forever.

"But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 5:8

A Prayer for This
