Why Did Jesus Have to Die on the Cross?

The Biblical Answer

Jesus' death on the cross may seem cruel and unnecessary, but it was the only way to pay for our sins and reconcile us with God. You see, God is a just and holy God, and sin cannot coexist with Him. As Psalm 51:4 says, 'Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.'
But here's the beautiful thing: God doesn't just forgive our sins, He sends His Son to take the punishment for us. That's why Jesus said, 'I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me... I lay down my life for the sheep' (John 10:14-15, NIV). When Jesus died on the cross, He didn't die as the guilty one; He died as the innocent substitute for us. This is the central message of the Bible: God is love, and He wants a relationship with us.
So, when we put our trust in Jesus and what He did on the cross, we can know that our sins are forgiven, and we have eternal life with God. It's not just a matter of God overlooking our sins; it's a matter of God taking the punishment for our sins, so we can be with Him forever.

"God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

Romans 5:8
