What is the Purpose of the Urim and Thummim?

The Biblical Answer

The Urim and Thummim were used by the priests in the Old Testament to discern God's will and guidance for the nation of Israel.

In Exodus 28:30, God instructed Moses to place the Urim and Thummim in the breastplate of the high priest, Aaron, so that they could 'determine his counsel' (ESV) in matters of great importance, such as seeking God's guidance in times of war, choosing leaders, or making important decisions for the nation.

While we don't know exactly how they worked, the Urim and Thummim were probably instruments of God's sovereignty, helping the priests to discern God's will. They were not magic stones or tools of divination, but reminders of God's presence and wisdom in guiding Israel.

The New Testament emphasizes that our hearts, not magical instruments, are the means of discerning God's will. As the apostle Paul writes, 'We are to put no confidence in the flesh,' but instead, 'to know this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our sinful body might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin…' (Romans 6:6-7).

As Christians, we are called to trust in Jesus, Who is the true source of wisdom and guidance for our lives.

"You will not find anything that is hidden from you, and you will not desire anything that is withheld from you."

Job 42:3 (ESV)
