Biblical Question
The Bible's Teaching on Living Together Before Marriage
The Biblical Answer
The Bible clearly teaches that living together before marriage is not God's design for committed relationships. In 1 Corinthians 6:18-20, the Apostle Paul warns against immorality and instructs believers to "flee from sexual immorality." He also stresses the importance of honoring one's body as a temple of the Holy Spirit. While we understand that not every family of faith may share an exact view on cohabitation, we can't deny the scriptural instruction to live with the understanding that marriage is more than just a commitment between two people -it is a union with God, and we need to respect His design. As the Bible advises in 2 Corinthians 6:14, "Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" It is a beautiful expression of how God wants us all to honor His design for intimacy by making a commitment of love and loyalty through a marriage covenant.
"Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body."
A Prayer for This
"Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your guidance in navigating complex relationships. As we seek to love and honor you, we pray for wisdom and discipline to honor your design for intimacy and commitment. Help us to flee from unrighteousness and live into the beautiful union you have planned for us. Amen."
