Biblical Question
What's the Purpose of Genocide in the Old Testament?
The Biblical Answer
When we read about God commanding the Israelites to wipe out entire nations, it can be unsettling and even lead to questions like 'Was God really like that?' or 'Is God a ruthless killer?'
The key to understanding this is to recognize that God's primary goal was not to destroy innocent people, but rather to purify and correct the corrupt cultures and idolatrous practices that were poisoning those societies.
Take for example the Babylonian Empire, which was brutal and violent. Their gods were false idols, and their practices were heinous. God used the Babylonians themselves to judge them, but ultimately, He brought them to justice and gave them what they deserved.
In this context, God's commands to the Israelites were not about annihilating entire nations but about preserving their own safety and faithfulness to Him, as well as bringing restoration to the lands they were to inhabit.

"I will judge you, each of you, according to your ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Idolatry has caused my people to become nothing more than a nation of idolaters."
A Prayer for This
"Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for being a God of justice, yet mercy. Comfort us in the midst of confusing passages and give us wisdom to understand your ways, even when they don't align with our own sensibilities. We pray for your guidance and for hearts that are fully surrendered to you."
