Was Jesus Really Born on December 25th?

The Biblical Answer

The exact date of Jesus' birth is not specified in the Bible. In fact, the Gospel writers don't even imply that Jesus was born on December 25.

The early Christian church observed the Epiphany, which celebrates the visit of the Magi to Jesus, on January 6. It wasn't until the 4th century, in Rome, that Christmas was celebrated on December 25, possibly to coincide with existing Roman and Germanic festivals.

Luke 2:1-7 describes the circumstances of Jesus' birth, mentioning that he was born during the reign of Emperor Augustus, in Bethlehems. But the date itself remains a mystery, leaving us to focus on the true meaning of Christmas: the birth of our Savior, the love of God in the flesh, and the hope of eternal life.

So, while December 25 may be the day we celebrate Jesus' birth, we shouldn't get too caught up in trying to pinpoint the exact date. After all, as the Psalmist says: 'We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.'

"We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."

2 Corinthians 4:18

A Prayer for This

"Dear Lord, help us to look beyond the externals of Christmas to the true meaning of Jesus' birth. Give us eyes to see your love and hope in the world, and a heart to celebrate all year long. May your presence be the greatest gift we give and receive this season. Amen."
