Is Birth Control or Family Planning Biblical?

The Biblical Answer

As Christians, we're often faced with difficult decisions around birth control and family planning. The Bible teaches us to steward our bodies and reproductive capabilities wisely. While there's no straightforward biblical prohibition on birth control, many methods can be seen as contradictory to God's original design. In Genesis 1:28, God blesses humanity and commands us to be fruitful and multiply, implying that childbearing is a natural part of life.

The Bible also highlights the importance of relationships and intimacy within marriage, underscoring the interconnectedness of procreation and love (1 Corinthians 7:3-5). Some forms of birth control might separate these connections, potentially undermining the intimacy and unity desired within a marriage.

However, this doesn't mean couples have to abstain from family planning altogether. Many Christians choose to adopt natural family planning (NFP) methods, which recognize the cyclical nature of fertility and allow couples to plan their family while still respecting God's created order. NFP methods promote greater intimacy, communication, and unity within a marriage, ultimately deepening the couple's faith and understanding of God's sovereignty over their lives.

Ultimately, the decision to use birth control or family planning should be guided by prayer, self-examination, and a willingness to listen to the voice of God through scripture, the Holy Spirit, and wise Christian counsel. Couples should carefully consider their goals, circumstances, and values before making choices that impact their faith, relationships, and overall well-being.

"Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it."

Genesis 1:28
