Biblical Question
Is Being Rich a Sin? What Did Jesus Mean by the Camel and the Needle?
The Biblical Answer
Being rich in itself is not a sin, but the attitude and motivations behind wealth accumulation can lead us astray. Jesus taught that wealth can be a significant obstacle to entering the kingdom of God. In Luke 18:24-25, he told a parable about a rich man who struggled to follow God because of his wealth. Jesus said, 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.' This isn't an impossible task, but rather, it highlights the importance of humility, trust, and surrender. When wealth becomes our security, identity, or idol, it becomes a hindrance to our faith. However, when we recognize God as our provider and source of security, we can experience liberation, even with wealth.
As Christians, we should prioritize generosity, contentment, and stewardship of our resources. We can be rich and still honor God by using our wealth to serve others and demonstrate God's love in the world. Remember, the key is not the amount of wealth we have, but the condition of our hearts.

A Prayer for This
"Dear God, help me to see my wealth as a gift from you, not a source of security or identity. I pray that my heart remains humble, trusting, and open to your will. Bless me to use my resources to serve and glorify you."
