Why Did God Harden Pharaoh's Heart? Does It Mean We Don't Have Free Will?

The Biblical Answer

In the story of Exodus, God hardens Pharaoh's heart to demonstrate His power and to fulfill His purposes. This doesn't mean that Pharaoh didn't have any free will; rather, it means that God was actively working in Pharaoh's life to bring about His own plan. The Bible says, 'I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth' (Romans 9:17). God hardened Pharaoh's heart, but He also hardened the hearts of those who trusted in idols, as the prophet Isaiah wrote, 'And they worshiped and put their trust in what their own hands have made' (Isaiah 2:8). We can't ignore the role of human choice and action in the events that unfold. Pharaoh's heart was hardened, but he still made the choice to resist God's call and suffer the consequences. This paradox reminds us that our choices have consequences, but God is ultimately in control, working out His plan according to His purposes.

"For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified."

Romans 8:29-30

A Prayer for This

"Lord, help us to trust in Your sovereignty and plan, even when we don't understand the details. Grant us the freedom to make choices, while reminding us that You are working everything out for our good. Bless those who are seeking to understand Your ways."
