Biblical Question
What Does it Mean When the Book of Ecclesiastes Says 'Everything is Meaningless'?
The Biblical Answer
When the book of Ecclesiastes says 'everything is meaningless' (Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12:8), it's not saying that there's no purpose or value in life. Rather, it's highlighting the futility and emptiness that we experience when we live life without God. The author, King Solomon, had it all - wealth, power, wisdom - but despite his many pursuits, he found that nothing truly satisfied him.
This doesn't mean that life is devoid of purpose or joy. God created us to enjoy life and bring glory to Him (1 Timothy 4:4). But when we put our trust in things other than God, they inevitably fall short of our deepest longings. The meaninglessness that Ecclesiastes describes is a call to re-examine our values and priorities, and to put our hope in the living God who alone can fulfill our hearts' deepest desires.

"I have seen everything in the days of my vanity. There is a righteous man who perishes in his righteousness, and there is a wicked man who prolongs his life in his evil-doing."
A Prayer for This
"Dear God, thank You for creating us with a deep desire for purpose and meaning. Help us to see that You alone can satisfy our longings and give us the life we truly crave. Give us courage to put our trust in You and Your goodness, even when life seems meaningless and uncertain. Amen."
