Biblical Question
Is it a Sin for a Christian to Date or Marry a Non-Believer?
The Biblical Answer
At first glance, marrying someone who doesn't share our faith may seem like a recipe for disaster. However, the Bible teaches that it's not the non-believer's faith that's the determining factor, but rather our own commitment to God. In 2 Corinthians 6:14, it says,
"Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?" However, this isn't a command to never date or marry outside the church. Rather, it's a warning to be cautious and not be unequally yoked in a way that could lead to spiritual harm. If both partners are committed to their faith and willing to support each other spiritually, God can still bring good from the union. In 1 Corinthians 7:12-16, the apostle Paul says that if an unbelieving husband or wife is willing to live with a Christian, it's okay to stay in the marriage and even pray for the non-believer's salvation.
