What is the Purpose of Tithing in the Bible?

The Biblical Answer

The biblical purpose of tithing is not just about giving 10% of our income, but about acknowledging God as the source of all our blessings. In the Old Testament, tithing was a way to express gratitude and worship God through sacrificial giving. As recorded in Deuteronomy 14:22-23 and 26:12-15, Israelites were instructed to give a tenth of their crops, livestock, and other products to the Levites and the poor. This act demonstrated faith and trust in God's provision, recognizing that everything we have belongs to Him. While the Mosaic law specified a 10% tithe, Jesus taught that giving should be voluntary and done with a heart of generosity (Matthew 6:1-4, 2 Corinthians 9:7). In other words, we shouldn't just give a certain percentage out of obligation, but with a spirit of love and thankfulness.

"And you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so you shall be in wealth and he shall bless you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

Deuteronomy 8:18 (NIV)

A Prayer for This

"Dear Heavenly Father, help me to understand the true purpose of tithing and to give generously with a willing heart. Remind me that everything I have is from you, and that my giving is an act of worship and gratitude. Amen."
