How to Discipline Your Child According to the Bible

The Biblical Answer

Disciplining your child is one of the most challenging and critical responsibilities of parenting. According to the Bible, God's approach to discipline is not to break or condemn, but to correct and instruct. In Proverbs 22:6, it says, 'Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.' This verse emphasizes the importance of setting a good foundation early on and consistently modeling and teaching your child the right values and behaviors.

The Bible also warns against overindulging or being too harsh on your child, saying in Proverbs 29:15, 'A rod of discipline will drive it far away.' What does this mean? It's not that physical punishment is the only or even the best form of discipline. Instead, it highlights the importance of using corrective measures that are firm, yet gentle and loving, like a shepherd guiding their sheep. This means addressing your child's actions, not attacking their character or worth as a person.

"Correction and instruction lead me to have life, that I might avoid evil."

Proverbs 19:20 (ESV)

A Prayer for This

"Dear God, thank you for loving and guiding us as we raise our children. Help us be wise and patient, knowing that your Spirit is at work in our lives, shaping and molding our little ones into the people you created them to be. In Jesus' name, we ask this, Amen."
