Biblical Question
What Does the Bible Say About Self-Defense and Protecting Your Family?
The Biblical Answer
As followers of Jesus Christ, it's essential to understand our responsibilities towards protecting ourselves and our loved ones. The Bible instructs us to 'owe no one anything, except to love each other, since God also loved us in this way' (Romans 13:8). This doesn't mean we should be passive or vulnerable to harm. Instead, we should strive to live in harmony with others, but also to prioritize the safety of those in our care.
In times of danger, it's clear the Bible doesn't prohibit self-defense or protecting our loved ones. In fact, the apostle Paul advises wives to 'live with their husbands in an understanding way, showing respect so that nothing will hinder the prayer' (1 Peter 3:1). In cases where husbands were being mistreated, Paul encouraged them to 'live at peace with all men' (Romans 12:18). When threatened or harmed, God empowers us to protect ourselves and those we love as seen in the biblical examples of David (1 Samuel 18:10-11, 23:10-12) and Jehoida the priest (2 Kings 11:2-3, 4, 5, 10).
Our self-defense should never be driven by anger or malice, but by a desire to protect and preserve life. We should also recognize that true security and protection come from our reliance on God. 'The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run into it and are safe' (Proverbs 18:10). When facing danger, we are reminded that our strength comes not from our own efforts, but from trusting in God and His power to protect us. As believers, we pray for His guidance and wisdom to navigate these situations with love, compassion, and courage.
