Prayer to Protect a Friend in Abuse

Scripture Focus

"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble"

— Psalm 46:1

Find comfort in prayer for a friend in an abusive relationship

A Short Prayer

"Dear Lord, I lift up my friend to you, surrounded by abuse and fear. Bring them your peace and protection. Guide them to safety and healing."

A Deeper Prayer

Heavenly Father, I come before you with a heavy heart, praying for my friend who is trapped in an abusive relationship. As it is written, 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble' (Psalm 46:1), I ask that you be their refuge and strength in this dark time. Bring them your peace that surpasses all understanding, and guide them to a path of safety and healing. Help them to see their worth and the love you have for them, and give them the courage to seek help and escape this bondage. Surround them with your loving care and protection, dear Lord, and may they soon find solace in your loving arms.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if I'm not sure if someone is being abused?+

The Bible teaches us to 'bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ' (Galatians 6:2). Trust in God's leading and wisdom, praying for discernment and guidance to identify and support those in need.

How can I effectively pray for my friend's abuser?+

Pray for salvation and transformation, asking God to 'give all who are godless and wicked what they wish for, for they have been fighting against you' (Psalm 83:16). This allows us to love our friends and pray for both parties without condoning their behavior.

What if praying for my friend doesn't seem to be working?+

Faith is not seen by its immediate results, but in God's sovereignty and goodness. 'We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope' (Romans 5:3-4). Our prayer life is not a guarantee of specific outcomes, but rather an act of trust and obedience to God's purposes.
