A Prayer for a Child Who Is Learning to Forgive

Forgiveness is one of the most important — and most difficult — lessons a child can learn. When a friend hurts their feelings, a sibling breaks their toy, or someone says something mean, children naturally want to hold onto that hurt.

As parents, we have the beautiful opportunity to teach our children about the transformative power of forgiveness — the same forgiveness that God extends to each of us through Christ. This prayer asks God to soften your child's heart and help them understand that forgiveness is not weakness, but one of the greatest acts of strength.

A Short Prayer

"Dear God, my child is struggling to forgive someone who hurt them. Please soften their heart and help them understand that forgiveness sets them free. Give them the courage to let go of anger and the grace to choose love, just as You have loved and forgiven us. Amen."

A Deeper Prayer

Loving Father, I lift up my precious child to You today. Someone has hurt them, and they're carrying a weight of anger and pain that is too heavy for their young shoulders. Lord, You understand this feeling — You know what it's like to be hurt by those You love. Please work in my child's heart in a way that only You can. Help them to understand what forgiveness truly means — not that what happened was okay, but that they are choosing to release the hurt instead of holding onto it. Teach them that forgiveness is a gift they give themselves. Give my child empathy, Lord. Help them to see that the person who hurt them is also imperfect, also struggling, also in need of grace — just like all of us. Plant seeds of compassion in their heart that will grow into a lifetime of gracious living. Help me as a parent to model forgiveness well. Let my child see me extending grace to others, admitting when I'm wrong, and choosing reconciliation over resentment. Give me the right words to explain forgiveness in a way my child can understand. Most of all, Lord, let my child experience Your forgiveness personally. Let them know deep in their bones that You love them unconditionally, that You forgive them freely, and that this same love and forgiveness is theirs to share with the world. In Jesus' gentle name, Amen.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age can children learn about forgiveness?+

Children can begin learning about forgiveness as early as ages 3-4, starting with simple concepts like saying sorry and making up after a disagreement. As they grow, they can understand deeper aspects of forgiveness, including empathy, grace, and the choice to release anger. Model forgiveness consistently, and it will become part of their character.

How do I teach my child to forgive without dismissing their pain?+

Validate your child's feelings first — let them know it's okay to feel hurt and angry. Then gently explain that forgiveness doesn't mean pretending the hurt didn't happen. It means choosing not to let that hurt control them anymore. Use age-appropriate language and share stories from the Bible about forgiveness.

What if my child refuses to forgive?+

Be patient. Forgiveness is a process, not a one-time event. Don't force your child to say they forgive before they're ready. Instead, continue to pray for them, model forgiveness yourself, and create a safe environment where they can process their emotions. The Holy Spirit will work in their heart in His perfect timing.
