When the World Feels Out of Control
It is easy to feel as though the ground beneath us is shifting. Everywhere we turn, the news cycle is dominated by stories of conflict, economic instability, and cultural divide. If you are feeling anxious, exhausted, or overwhelmed by the state of the world today, please know that you are not alone. It is a natural human response to feel unsettled when the world seems to be spiraling. However, as believers, we are called to a different standard of living. We are not called to be dictated by the headlines, but to be defined by the Hope of the Ages.
The secret to finding rest in turbulent times isn't found in checking the news less, nor is it found in ignoring the reality of the world’s pain. Instead, true, lasting peace is found in shifting your gaze from the chaos of the earth to the throne of Heaven. When we anchor our hearts in the unchanging sovereignty of God, we move from a place of panic to a place of profound, supernatural rest.
The Anchor of God’s Sovereignty
What does it mean to trust in God’s sovereignty? It means believing that nothing—absolutely nothing—takes God by surprise. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. He is not frantically trying to fix a situation that has slipped from His grasp. He is actively sustaining the universe by the word of His power, even in the midst of the storms we see today.
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." — Isaiah 26:3 (NIV)
This verse is a promise for today. It doesn't say that God will keep us in peace only when the world is quiet. It says He keeps us in perfect peace—a peace that defies logic—when our minds are stayed on Him. Our peace is a byproduct of our focus. When we fix our eyes on the conflict, we feel the weight of the world; when we fix our eyes on the Creator, we feel the weight of His glory.
Three Truths to Anchor Your Soul
- God is Still on the Throne: No political upheaval, economic shift, or global conflict can remove God from His rightful place. He is the King of kings, and His reign is eternal.
- Your Life is Secure in His Hands: You are not a casualty of chance. Your life is held by the One who knit you together in your mother's womb. Because He is sovereign, your future is secure, regardless of the chaos surrounding you.
- His Purpose is Greater Than Our Pain: While we may not understand the "why" behind the suffering we witness in our world, we can rest in the "Who." God is working all things together for the good of those who love Him, even when that work is hidden from our view.
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." — John 14:27 (NIV)
Practicing the Presence of Peace
How do we practically live this out? It begins with prayer. When your heart begins to race, bring those fears to the Lord. Acknowledge your lack of control, and verbally surrender your anxieties to Him. Spend time in the Scriptures, where the character of God is revealed as faithful, unchanging, and kind.
"The Lord sits enthroned over the flood; the Lord is enthroned as King forever. The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace." — Psalm 29:10-11 (NIV)
The flood may be rising, but the Lord remains enthroned over it. Today, I invite you to take a deep breath and release the burden of needing to know how everything will turn out. You don't need to know the future; you only need to know the One who holds it. Anchor your heart in His love, root your identity in His promise, and walk forward with a peace that the world didn't give, and the world—no matter how unsettled it becomes—can never take away.
