When the World Feels Like It’s Shaking
It seems that every time we turn on the news or scroll through our social media feeds, we are met with headlines of instability. Whether it is the sudden onset of natural disasters, economic volatility, or the general sense of unrest in our global community, it is easy to feel as though the ground beneath our feet is shifting. If you are feeling anxious, weary, or overwhelmed by the state of the world, please know that you are not alone—and more importantly, you are not without a place of safety.
As a pastor, I speak to many people who feel as though they are losing their grip. We are human; we were wired for stability, and when our circumstances become unpredictable, our hearts naturally cry out for something—or someone—that remains the same. The good news of the Gospel is not that we are promised a world free of storms, but that we are promised a Captain who is greater than the wind and the waves.
God: Our Constant Refuge
When the world shakes, our instinct is often to scramble for temporary security. We look for safety in finances, in our own strength, or in the promise of normalcy. Yet, Scripture invites us into a much deeper, more profound kind of rest. We are invited to hide ourselves in the shadow of the Almighty. When we make God our dwelling place, we find that while the world around us may be fragile, our spiritual foundation is immovable.
"God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea." — Psalm 46:1-2
This verse is not a suggestion that we should ignore the reality of suffering or the intensity of a disaster. Instead, it is an authoritative declaration that God’s presence is more significant than the crisis at hand. He is an "ever-present" help, meaning He is not a distant observer of your pain. He is present in the middle of the shaking, providing a shelter that no earthly storm can dismantle.
The Anchor for Your Soul
In the ancient world, an anchor was the ultimate symbol of hope and security for those at sea. When the waves became violent, a ship’s survival depended entirely on the anchor’s ability to hold fast to the seabed. Our faith functions in the exact same way. When life feels chaotic, we must ensure our "anchor" is cast into the right place. If your anchor is tied to your circumstances, you will drift whenever the tide changes. But when your anchor is tied to the character of Jesus Christ, you are held fast by an unchangeable reality.
Consider the powerful assurance found in the book of Hebrews:
"We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf." — Hebrews 6:19-20
Jesus is our forerunner. He has gone before us into the presence of the Father. Because He holds your life in His hands, you can rest in the knowledge that your future is secure, regardless of the chaos in the present.
Practical Steps to Find Peace Today
- Shift Your Focus: When anxiety spikes, replace the news cycle with the Word of God. Meditate on His promises rather than the headlines.
- Practice Lament: It is okay to be honest with God about your fear. He is big enough to handle your questions and your tears.
- Cultivate Gratitude: Even in the middle of a disaster, look for the small mercies—the breath in your lungs, the kindness of a neighbor, or the sunrise. Gratitude grounds us in the goodness of God.
- Remember Your Identity: Remind yourself daily that you are a child of God, loved with an everlasting love that cannot be shaken by the events of this world.
The prophet Isaiah captures the heart of God for His people in these beautiful words:
"You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you." — Isaiah 26:3
My prayer for you today is that you would stop trying to hold onto the world, and instead, allow God to hold onto you. Let Him be your anchor. Let Him be your refuge. When you finally release your need for control and surrender to His sovereign care, you will find the deep, unwavering peace that passes all understanding—a peace that remains, even when the world shakes.
